JOIN A CLASS
True Edge Academy currently has two branches that we simply call ‘True Edge Salt Lake’ and ‘True Edge South’. True Edge South is also a university club at Utah Valley University (UVU) that offers classes to the community. Participants under the age of 16 must have a participating adult, i.e. a parent, with them.
Each group normally meets twice weekly at the times and locations listed below. There are swords, fencing masks and some additional protective gear available for beginners, but acquiring one’s own gear is encouraged.
Our curriculum centers around the Liechtenauer, or German, tradition of the longsword. We apply modern organization and educational theory to the medieval and renaissance fencing treatises resulting in a holistic fighting system. New students start in our 4-6 week beginners course that focuses on the fundamentals, such as proper balance and footwork and basic cutting movements. Upon finishing the beginner’s course students advance into intermediate classes and higher levels of study.
Once scholars have built a foundation with the longsword, they can elect to branch out into other weapons, including rapier, messer, dussack, saber, sword & buckler, polearms, and dagger, or into medieval wrestling. Scholars may also study and interpret the historical treatises themselves, to gain further knowledge and contribute to the wider HEMA community.
- All participants must sign a martial arts waiver and a waiver for the HEMA Alliance (HEMAA), if the participant is under 18 years old this must be signed by a parent or guardian.
- Participants must pay dues, see below, these dues go to the rental of training space, purchase of club gear, and other club expenses.
- If the participant is under 16 years of age they must have a participating adult, such as a parent, with them to attend.
- Club members will also be responsible for maintaining a HEMAA membership after their first two months. A HEMAA membership is $ 26 a year and is necessary for the club’s liability insurance, it also provides discounts from some HEMA vendors and events.
What do I need for my first class?
An open mind and a willingness to listen. A water bottle, athletic clothing, and shoes that are comfortable and permit mobility are also helpful. You will be moving around, and performing actions such as lunging, squatting, and arm extension. No previous experience with swords or martial arts is required.
Beginners do not require any gear to start, the club has swords, fencing masks and some gloves available for drilling. Students will eventually need to acquire their own protective gear to participate in full-contact sparring.

Other Utah HEMA groups:
United Clans Swordsman Association (UCSA) is another group of HEMA enthusiasts in Salt Lake City that focuses on the Fiore, or Italian, tradition. True Edge Salt Lake shares a practice space with the UCSA and helps teach beginners classes with them. A number of students attend both clubs and there are a few joint events throughout the year. They meet on Thursday nights and Saturday afternoons.
